Wildfire detection and emergency response in remote mountain forests

During a series of FIXAR 007 NG test flights, the flight operations team detected an active wildfire in a valley within the operational area.

FIXAR UAV mission for object detection and tracking in mountainous terrain

Challenge

The situation was critical due to the fire’s proximity to inhabited zones and rapidly changing wind conditions. Using advanced aerial surveillance and tracking technology, the FIXAR flight operations team provided real-time data to firefighting and rescue teams, enabling precise coordination and effective suppression of the wildfire.

Wildfire monitoring faces significant challenges, including limited access to the fire front due to safety concerns, restricted close approach by aerial units, and difficulties in accurately tracking fire spread, direction, and behavior. Traditional observation methods often lack the timely, precise data for critical operational decisions, especially as wildfires can rapidly escalate in remote or mountainous terrain. In this case, the nearby infrastructure was at risk, making accurate and timely data even more crucial for an effective response.

Solution

The FIXAR 007 NG is equipped with a Viewpro A40TR camera with 40x optical zoom, enabling detailed remote monitoring from a safe distance staying well clear and far from the hazard zone to avoid interfering with rescue teams. The camera’s tracking capability allows continuous observation of the fire front and critical assets, such as nearby buildings, providing precise coordinates and guiding helicopter water drop operations.

Results

As a result of the aerial video monitoring, crucial information on the fire’s spread, direction, and speed was collected and used to guide firefighting efforts, enabling precise water drops and protecting nearby infrastructure.

This case exemplifies how the FIXAR 007 NG provided a vital advantage in wildfire monitoring by operating safely away from hazardous fire zones, significantly reducing risk to human pilots. Its quick setup and launch time of under five minutes allowed rapid deployment in response to emerging fires or sudden flare-ups. Equipped with a 40x zoom camera, the UAV delivered detailed observations while minimizing interference with manned aircraft and firefighting operations.

The mission demonstrated how FIXAR UAV technology can turn a critical situation into a coordinated success.
